I used my roomates ipad and she let my download two apps on it because she has younger nephews that could potentially enjoy either App. The first one I chose was called Beauty and the Beast Storybook Deluxe. Basically, it's an app that allows kids to interactively be involved while reading their favorite Disney classic movie. In this case, the movie was Beauty and the Beast. To make the story more fun, there are coloring pages and extra puzzles to go along with the story on the side. This would work in a classroom because you wouldn't have to just read a book outloud during story time, the kids could be read and follow along for themselves, and interactively be involved with something that interests them.
The second app that I chose was Magic Piano HD. This app automatically caught my eye because I am heavily involved with music. Basically the app is just a way for a kid to learn the basics of playing a piano without having to take music lessons, and without it being really serious. You can choose the shape of your piano whether it's spiral, or a circle. I think this app would be helpful in a music class specifically, just to give the kids a chance to explore a piano on their own, without it being really serious. This app could also be used as a way to introduce a new music lesson to catch the student's attention.

QUOTE: With Scratch, students shift from media consumers to media producers, creating their own
interactive stories, games, and animations—then sharing their creations on the Web.
RESPONSE: I agree with this segment of the article. Before it talks about how people just waste their time on the web, just to surf, or to pass th time by. But with scratch, it gives people (kids) the opportunity to be creative and produce their own piece of work. And the work can be meaningful to them, or not, it is up to them. With the scratch program, it is a great chance for people to be the creator, and using logic as to when sound effects should take place, or when characters (Sprites) should move where.

This video is mainly about scratch, and how to work it. People are able to create their own types of works that are special to them in some way. Designed solely for them.

Wikipedia is a "multilingual, Web-based encyclopedia project, operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit organization." In answering the question “How reliable can a source be when anyone can edit it?”, it's said even in the article that you can't really depend on it because it only works in "practice, so it can never work". The creators of Wikipedia put their fath in "the widom of crowds". They believe that having a lot people will help weed out errors, and vandalism sooner or later. Larry Spanger left Wikipedia because he believed it should give more authority ; and has created a new site called citizendium that does just that.
Abuse or vandalism on a wikipedia page would be like copyrighted stuff from other websites or rude opinionated things shared on the site. In the 3rd paragraph it reveals that the English Wikipedia published article number 2,000,000; and there are currently wikipdeias in more than 280 languages with a total of more than eight million articles. It's also revealed that the encyclopedia is among the top 10 most-visited sites on the internet around the world. I think Wikipedia is so successful because it's open to the public to add their information onto the site. Wikipedia's creators might not want to accept advertising because a lot of times, there is false advertising. Wikiscanner helps increase the reliability of Wikipedia entries by weeding out the ones that promote false advertising.

Exploring. It is traditional that schools would teach students to move as fast and efficiently as possible towards a goal, but games are different. They encourage players to sit back, explore and not move on too quickly, think laterally not linearly, and to re-evaluate one’s goals on occasion.
RESPONSE: I agree 100% with this section of the article. In the classroom you see it everyday, teachers rushing their students to accomplish a certain goal by a certain point of the semester/ quarter. I agree that games are different, whenever any kid at all ( not just a student) is presented with a new game, they will want to really explore it. And by explore it I mean really take their time with it and find out what works best for what situation. I agree that games encourage players to sit back fully enjoy the game, and to re-evaluate their strategies on how they approach different situations.

QUOTE: "Researchers who directed several hundred college students to three bogus Web sites about fictitious nutritional supplements found that half of the students lacked the skills to identify the trustworthiness of the information, yet most thought they had strong research skills."
RESPONSE: I found this part of the article to be interesting and am not really surprised by it. I remember in highschool in one of my English classes, we did a class activity to see who could figure out what was a reliable source and what wasnt; a lot of us failed. A lot of times, students see something that catches their attention, and don't really look into it to see if it's the truth or not. Like in this article, the "fictitious nutritional supplement" was presented as something ineresting to the students, so whichever website had more appealing facts, caught their attention more. than other generations"
REACTION: I agree with this simple statement because I can relate from personal experience. Me as well as all of my friends were born in the 90s and we all seem to be really into new technologies that have been booming since the early 90's. My younger sister and her friends seem to be a good example of this. They have been using different social networking sites since they could get on the internet and could type. They are all very advanced, and have different things to access the internet and these sites with. Such as ipads, kindel fires, and regular ipods/touch phones. Also something I've noticed about the at a young age is that they like to be on the internet alone which isn't always good because they should be supervised. There are many apps and other tools that can be hlepful though at times that can be accessed on ipads. Also with projects and research papers, students at a young age are getting familiar with copying and pasting settings, which could potentially get the in trouble when it comes to media literacy.

1. Three things I can infer from the photo are: 1- The people are happy. 2- There is alot going on in the background. 3- The mood isn't very serious.
2.Oil Spill: BP Gulf leak could stain President Obama like Iran Hostage crisis destroyed Jimmy Carter
This title doesn't really make me question anything. But it is interesting to see that they can compare the incident with Iran and Jimmy Carter to the oil spill and president Obama.
The picture that gives me more confidence in the leadership abilities of Obama would have to be picture number 2 where he is sitting there in deep thought. And it's a close up picture, and he looks more serious rather than in the first picture where everyone is laughing.
Class Activity #2 Fair Use
1.)Media in education is using digital and audio things to present different facts
and information. Media literacy education is teaching people to access, analyze,
evaulate, and share messages, but only works
when people have a strong understanding of "fair use".
2.)The social bargain at the heart of fair use is purely just copying.
3.)Fair use is more important today because copy right protects and backs up more documents and pictures for a longer period of time, and creators have a harder time getting and paying for licenses to use the material.
4.) Two key questions that judges use to determine fair use are:
"Did the unlicensed use “transform” the material taken from the copyrighted work by using it for a different purpose than that of the original, or did it just repeat the work for the same intent and value as the original?" and "Was the material taken appropriate in kind and amount, considering the nature of the copyrighted work and of the use?"
5.)Yes that is Fair Use. The Lion King was a copyrighted work, but since it was being used as a way to teach and wasn't transformed in anyway, it would fall under Fair Use.
6.) The principle that relates the strongest to my digital story is principle 2.. I used my own pictures to create my video.
7.)No.
8.) No because you are using it for educational purposes, so you just have to make sure that you correctly cite the material.
9.)Yes, educators need to do things legally so they can lead by example. If students see their teachers not doing the correct things, they won't think that they have to either.
10.) The myth that surprised me the most was that "fair use was too complicated and best left up to lawyers" I had already had that thought and didn't think it would be that simple of a process.

Double Entry Journal #5
My video does fall under the Fair Use Guidlines. First, it was used strictly for education purposes in that it was a required assignment for class. All of the photos that I used in the video were mine, so they didn't require any credit at the end of the video. The song that I used was "Wherever I Go" by Miley Cyrus, and I didn't change the format in anyway so credit was given at the end of my video. I also know that my video fell under the guidlines because Youtube let me fully upload it without any problems.

QUOTE: " Kinesthetic students face similar frustration when they are not allowed to move in a classroom. To relieve stress, they seek to break out of these constraints . When faced with several hours of desk work, for which they are required to "sit still" they tend to get up to sharpen their pencil several times, they ask to go to the restroom, or they drop things, so they can get up to retrieve them, They may seek to be class monitors, to run errands. If they can't engage in these activities, they will at least begin to move while in their seats: wiggling their legs, leaning back in their chairs, rocking, or tapping their pencils. When these actions are also not acceptable, they may resort to misbehavior as part of a psychological need to move. Teachers consider many of these behaviors as red flags for an attention (or behavioral) disorder."
RESPONSE: I found this part of the article to be the most interesting to me. In the begginning of the article it talks about how everyone today thinks that they can just label a child as ADD or ADHD based on their behaviors at an early age. But, a lot of the same characteristics show up with kinesthetic learners. As mentioned above, if a student is told to sit and do desk work for hours and they are a kinesthetic learner, they are going to struggle because they do better with hands on learning. So then, they go and find things to do around the classroom to keep themselves busy and this is when the teacher classifies the student as "ADD" or ADHD, which isn't right at all.

This Video basically supports everything that is said in the article. Kids are often classified as ADD or ADHD by teachers and everyday people when they really aren't. Kinesthetic learners are often the most misread because they need to learn with hands on things, and if the activity isn't hands on, then they can't sit still.

Visual learner by Briana Welch: Picassohead
I learned that i am a visual learner, and I would definately agree with this statement. The website said that learning wise, I would learn best form:
-books with diagrams and pictures
-underlining things in different colors
-using graphs and symbols.
It then said to use all of these techniques as well :
- Try reconstructing the images in different ways and different spatial arrangements.
- Redraw pages from memory
-Convert notes into a package by reducing them 3:1
Lastly, it gave tips on how to be successfull during an exam:
-recall pictures
-practice turning visuals back into words.
Three examples of how technology could help would be:
-creating graphs to remember percentages of amounts for a certain class online with a graphing website.
Standard1a.
promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
-Using the highlighting tool when typing notes and using different colors to remember certain phrases or words.
Standard1c.
promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.
-using different picture tools on microsoft word to convert words into symbolic images to help me remember the meaning.
Standard: 2a.
design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity

RESPONSE: I thought that he had an interesting point here because the article kind of started off very negative against texting and the texting language. As mentioned early in the article, some people don't really get the texting launguage and are annoyed by it, saying that young people are lazy and need to shorten words. But, I agree with the above quote and found it interesting that some of the abbreviations could be found in a 1942 dictionary of abbreviations. QUOTE: "Posters can get the visual students’ attention (Al-Failkawei, 2005). There are some words (noun or verbs) that will attract the visual learners. The noun words are vision, scene, image, eye, show, color. The verb words are imagine, clear, recognize, watch, and see (Al-Takriti, 1997). Visual learners like to read books that have color pictures (Al-Failkawei, 2005)."
RESPONSE: I agree with this statement about visual learners because I believe that I'm a visual learner myself. The example of posters is a great way to point out a visual learner in that they remember what words correspond with certain colors or what images relate to certain things on the poster. I also agree that nouns and verbs tend to catch the visual learner's attention. For example, if they see the word "vision" they can easily visualize what is trying to be portrayed. The same with the actual verb, "imagine", they will have no trouble at all imaging things and then applyig it to real life. To teach visual learners, I think that the web is a great source because there are many different websites where you can be artistic and still teach your students. Also, hands on games can be used to practice repetition for the visual learner.

QUOTE: "What if, indeed. After studying the matter, Ms. Davidson concluded, “Online blogs directed at peers exhibit fewer typographical and factual errors, less plagiarism, and generally better, more elegant and persuasive prose than classroom assignments by the same writers.”
RESPONSE: I agree with Ms. Davidson. The part before this part of the article it was talking about how students often turn in research papers that are not very acceptable and are written with poor quality. I think this is because students, all through their life, have to write papers and usually it is on a required subject and they get bored with that. But, as ms. Davidson said with blogs, there is less plagiarism and generally better and more persuasive by the same students. I think this is true because students are more interested when they can be themselves and aren't required to limit their opinions or feelings.
